  Non JW wife/JW husband Christmas tree debate

  first post here and looking for advice and help.

  i'm a happily married woman (no kids) who is a non-jw, presbyterian to be precise.

  This is the beginning of a new journey into the world of JW's. You will learn a lot, as I did four years ago.
  

  Full disclosure: I am a 52 y.o. atheist married to a JW woman for 23 years. For many years I liked the religion because all the members were good behaving, and even loving people. That idea changed four years ago when I did a research on the "religion" (actually is a cult run by goons, almost as bad as scientology). I don't like adults imprisoned in a cult, but I can live with it. However, children is a whole different thing. They are innocent victims. Don't have any children with this man unless you have the firm conviction that you WILL NOT raise them as JW's.

  Regarding your relationship, don't use my 23 year happy marriage as a comforting reason for your future. I am a man. You are a woman. As a woman, you are screwed in a patriarchal cult. Sorry for the bluntness, but you have to get ready.

  If mathematics teacher made a mistake, would it mean mathematics itself is wrong!

  many people point to the irrationality in the depiction of god by the religions and their scriptures, hence jump into the bottomless pit of atheism.

  in either camp, god is not a factor because religion is only a means that misrepresents god, hence religionists themselves are atheists (literally, those who live without god).

  it is like saying there exists no earth because you found out your friend who taught earth is flat is wrong; or it is like saying mathematics itself is wrong because you found out your mathematics teacher made a mistake.

  The teacher who makes mistakes may need to be trained again, and he/she will eventually get it right. Good thing the world of Mathematicians always agree because the evidence proves their common understanding.

  Believers in God, in the absence of any evidence, they need to always reassess their beliefs, but there's no certainty that they will ever get it right And the bad thing is that the world of religion always disagree, and not one believer can prove his belief.

  Venus, your analogy couldn't be worse.

  Belief in God is just as good and well supported as the belief in unicorns. No mockery intended, just reality

  Solution to the problem, build the wall, round up all Latinos, legal or illegal, citizen or not. No more fondling again in American soil. Expel those two Latinos in the news, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. They never fooled me; they have "Latino" written all over their faces.

  at one time scientists believed that living things and non-living things were made of different material, accounting for the unique properties of living things.

  this idea is called vitalism and is no longer popular.

  what does remain popular (in fact is still the dominant view) is a similar idea that things that experience the world (humans, frogs, mice) are different from things that don't experience the world (potatoes, rocks, snowflakes).

  Consciousness, a matter of "degree". Why not? I even like the idea, as long as it's kept n the realm of philosophy... for now.

  No evidence? ...I think there's enough evidence in the animal kingdom to make speculative inferences.

  However, I will apply the idea only to live matter.

  I know personally 3 people who were healed miraculously. On of them was my son; two were colleagues.

  Do you ever wonder why God chose those three people while he has ignored for thousands of years the plight and suffering of others. I guess your son is more special than millions of other sons and daughters. I call that narcissism. By the way, I am glad your son is doing well. But I would me much happier if the countless of others sons and daughters could share in your sons divine favor.

  You missed the part where I wrote that God is constantly changing to fit to current dominant morality, which always correct previous perceptions of God. The God of Abraham has suffered the fastest evolution ever since humanism appear five hundred years ago. It is humanism that is constantly causing theologians to reinterpret God.

  Of course God is real. We humans invented it. We made him a male, of course. We made him invisible, mostly -- only few people who lived long ago could see him. We made him silent, mostly --only the ancients could talk to him. We made him transcendental so we could shut the mouth of smart people who wanted proof. Also he is infinitely wise so is impossible to question his decisions, no matter how stupid or cruel they seem to us lowly humans. We also made him flexible so he could change His morality to the changing moralities of humans. It's been the most perfect invention of humans. He is never wrong. He has been injected with a rapidly evolving nature that allows Him to always provide the right answer to anyone, in any circumstance, no matter place or time. Billions use Him everyday and there's 99.9 %satisfaction. Take that Honda Motors
